About Town with LaVern Johnston - October 18, 2018
Nov 13, 2018Right after the High Street Concert. A terrible blizzard; we hope all those from Denver, Boulder, Longmont, etc., got home safe and sound. It was a great concert, but… The next Concert is in February.35 YEARS! Woe is me. I have been writing “About Town” for 35 years, starting in October of 1983! I used to give my news to Fern Rigdon and Dorothy Stevens who wrote the Lyons News and sent it to theTimes Call. Walt Kinderman, the Editor of the Lyons Recorder, kept roasting Virgil, who was Mayor at the time. Fern got mad at the slamming and quit writing the Lyons News, so I took it on. Before computers, I typed it, went out in the late night to put it in the Recorder Box, sometimes at 2 or 3 a.m. The only one around may have been Pete Harkalis who took midnight walks around town, and the skunks who came out of the culverts and roamed around town at that time. I do say computer and email are great. I have reported the news I know, the events, and try to relay to all the newcomers how this wonderful Town of Lyons came about. (Usually by fight or campaign against Coffintop Dam; for the Lyons High School; against the Spring Gulch quarry; for paving our streets; against a subdivision at Stone Mountain Lodge and to the north; for school bond issues, etc.)You are invited to send me your news at: lavern921@aol, or call (303) 823-5925, and we will keep on keeping on. I feel all the new folks need to know what they can about the town, the schools, the subdivisions, the streets, etc. Each has their own story!THANK YOU CAN’D AID Dale Katechis of Oskar Blue and the Ball Manufacturing; we want to thank and praise CAN’d Aid for providing 66,000 cans of water to the Florida hurricane victims. A wonderful thing to do. Oskar Blues Brewery shuts off the beer, and cans water for these flood victims, and Ball provides the cans. CAN’d Aid has donated more than 1.5 million cans of water to 20 disaster areas in 10 states over the past three years. Thank you!EXCITING EVENTThis week is the ground breaking ceremony for the Lyons Re...
